The University of Szeged, the Faculty of Science and Information Technology, the Department of Geology and Palaeontology

The University of Szeged, the Faculty of Science and Information Technology, the Department of Geology and Palaeontology has a leading role in the national research and education of archaeological geology and paleoenvironmental reconstructions. It was Dr Pal Sumegi who started the education of archaeological geology, also known as geoarchaeology. He also wrote the following lecture notes: The Basics of Geology and Ancient Living Conditions in the Quaternary, and The Basics of Archaeological Geology and Historical Ecology which have become essential in the researches and academic education in Hungary

The work and research at the department is comprehensive and of a high standard. It is done by mostly young researchers who have gained experience on field and also in laboratories. They take part in archaeological excavations (planned excavations, motorways), different types of geological drillings (basins, lakes, bogs, riverbeds, abandoned channels, etc) and other samplings (loess profiles).

The department takes a prominent part in the complex and comprehensive paleoenvironmental reconstructing works and researches. Identifying phytolith is only one method of the many that are available. Here are some of the most important research fields and methods used at the department:
